"An Introduction to Automobile Touch Up Paint, when it is best to use Spray Paint Cans and Paint Spray Guns"

It is a well known fact that a new vehicle as it leaves the factory will feature a perfect coat of fresh paint.

Over a period of time and daily driving however, the appearance of that vehicle will start to diminish; scratches and other such surface damage will start to occur.

Automobile Touch Up Paint

These commonly occurring problems are generally repaired via touch-up painting. Paint can be applied to auto body work in numerous ways, depending on the job at hand.

Using the small brush attached to the cap of a bottle of automobile touch up paint, you would carefully apply the paint to the scratches and other nicks.

Small chips about 1/8 inch wide and 3/8 inch long are typical of the kind of surface imperfections that can be easily fixed with touch up painting.

Using Spray Paint Cans

If wear and tear calls for the painting of small body items or trim, paint from spray paint cans could be used to bring the repair area back to its former glory.

To achieve optimum results from using spray paint cans, it's required that they are warm. This will help to thoroughly mix the ingredients of the paint and will give maximum power to the propellant.

To warm spray paint cans simply allow them to sit in a sink of warm water prior to use. Be very careful that you don't heat spray paint cans over their recommended safety temperature, which is clearly indicated on their label instructions.

Absolutely never hold spray paint cans over a naked flame!

Using Paint Spray Guns

In the event that your vehicle has been involved in a collision with another vehicle, generally the repair work for the various damaged parts or sections would be carried out by using conventional paint spray guns.

The techniques used in painting cars are decided by the type and amount of coverage needed and the existing surface material condition.

For example, to touch-up a small scratch it would not be sensible to use full size paint spray guns, conversely to refinish an entire panel using a touch-up brush would not be the most appropriate option.

In addition, paint from spray paint cans might be close enough to the color and texture to refinish or modify a trim piece, such as a side wing mirror.

Initially, it would be better to remove the mirror to avoid substantial masking.

Sanding the surface with 800-grit wet and dry sandpaper, cleaning it with wax and grease remover and then spraying on a couple of thin coats of automobile touch up paint will achieve the desired result.

Complete Vehicle Re-Sprays

If you are planning on re-painting your entire vehicle however, paint specifically meant for automotive re-finishing should be used.

In addition, all trim, lights, door handles, bumpers and virtually anything else that can be removed should be, rather than masked.

Preparation plays a vital role in painting cars. To obtain a professionally and visually acceptable, compatible and durable paint job, it is required that you use products designed for the right purpose and that they suit the existing paint finishes and undercoat preparations.

A paint job will only be long lasting, if the various layers of body filler, primer, sealer and final top coat are all part of the one system and compatible with one another.

One of the most important lessons you need to abide by with painting cars is to NEVER mix and match paint products that are part of different paint systems and/or made by different manufacturers.
